Opplysninger
The following case study is based on a 4-year doctoral study that explored and analyzed digital sex markets in the United Kingdom. Driven by an ethnographic approach, the study used online and offline multimethods to understand the economic and regulatory organization of digital sex markets and consider the impact on workers and customers. Digital sex work includes sexual services that are mediated by technologies such as webcamming, phone sex, and direct co-present sexual services organized through platforms and websites. This case study focuses on how I recruited customers to the project and the multiple online and offline approaches I took. I reflect on what went well and how recruitment could have been more successful and how I circumvented a small sample. The case study also demonstrates how online surveys can lead to additional data yet may not work as a tool of recruitment. Students will gain an insight into the exhaustive efforts to recruit hidden, hard-to-reach groups to an academic study, highlighting how the unexpected can illuminate your project.
