Opplysninger
This case study will share our experience with transforming a laboratory-based quantitative and qualitative mixed-methods research protocol for online home-based implementation (cf., Morison et al., 2015). Our social science research investigates childhood moral decision-making and offers our research participants opportunities to engage in interesting but challenging tasks where we can observe them in a safe, supportive, and naturalistic environment. This case study is directed to a reading audience of undergraduate and graduate post-secondary students contemplating conducting empirical research online. Here, we will (1) outline the efforts involved in the procedural transformation from in-person to online processes while ensuring that our applications are as valid as is possible; (2) describe the methodological adaptations that work well and modifications that are more challenging for online delivery; (3) detail technical challenges that we encountered and how to avoid them; (4) address the steps we took to ensure that the processes of institutional ethics review were carried out responsibly and expeditiously; and (5) portray some in situ challenges we encountered and overcame to benefit both the research and our participants.
