This case study is based on my PhD research project, where I sought to investigate the ways in which Malaysian Indian transgender people navigate and negotiate their identities on Facebook. The marginalization of the Malaysian transgender community has stemmed from the view and belief that Islam, the official religion of Malaysia, is against nonheteronormativity. The availability and accessibility of social media have provided a digital platform for the forcibly muted to be heard and for the marginalized to be visible. Subsequently, I argue that Facebook provides an alternative space for transgender people to perform and negotiate their identities. I situated my study within a social constructionist paradigm that views identity as fluid, dynamic, and discursively constructed. I adopted a qualitative approach and integrated a hybrid online ethnography for my analysis. I used a longitudinal design, where I systematically observed eight Malaysian Indian transgender individuals' Facebook profiles and augmented this data with interviews and informants' comments for my analysis. Here, I share an account of my research design, describe the means of recruitment of participants, data gathering, and analysis procedures. I focus on issues of ethics, anonymity, and reflexivity that affected my research.
