Patients admitted permanently to a somatic nursing homebetween 1979 and 1989 were retrospectively studied to find out themode of, and reasons for, admission. A total of 589 patientswere admitted. The percentage of demented patients increasedfrom 38 to 66%. The proportion of patients admitted from their ownhomes or from a hospital decreased, whereas the proportiontransferred from a short admission to a permanent stay increased. It is concluded that, in many cases, the public services forelderly people living in their own homes are unable to cope withthe problems that arise, especially in demented persons. Theproblem of "bed blockers" is no longer restricted to hospitals, butalso affects nursing home beds allocated for short timepurposes. It is necessary to develop a holistic approach to the tasks of caring for the elderly population, across existingadministrative levels.
