Psychological morbidity in caregivers is associated with depressionin patients with dementia

Caregivers had high rates and levels of psychologicalmorbidity which were associated with the severity of dementia (butneither the type nor duration), with the:caregiver being a spouse andfemale and living with the person with dementia. A logisticregression analysis identified clinician-rated patient depressionscore and demanding problem behaviors as being independently andsignificantly associated with caregiver psychological morbidity. Thisnew finding of a link between patient depression and caregiverpsychological morbidity has implications for more focused treatmentprograms for both caregivers and patients.
