The relationship between psychological morbidity in caregivers anddepression in patients with dementia was examined using datacollected on 193 patient-caregiver dyads attending a memory disordersclinic. Caregivers had high rates and levels of psychologicalmorbidity which were associated with the severity of dementia (butneither the type nor duration), with the:caregiver being a spouse andfemale and living with the person with dementia. A logisticregression analysis identified clinician-rated patient depressionscore and demanding problem behaviors as being independently andsignificantly associated with caregiver psychological morbidity. Thisnew finding of a link between patient depression and caregiverpsychological morbidity has implications for more focused treatmentprograms for both caregivers and patients.
