Opplysninger
The observed mortality of 397 elderly patients with organic braindisorder, recruited to the Salford Psychiatric Case Register between1 January 1968 and 31 December 1975 and followed up by record linkageto 31 December 1985, was compared with expected mortality. Theoverall SMR was 1.91. SMRs were significantly raised for all agegroups beyond 65 years, being highest in the younger age-bands anddeclining almost linearly with age. SMRs were elevated for both menand women, during all calendar periods, for incident and prevalentcases, and throughout the whole follow-up period, being highest inthe first year. While social class variations may account for up to9% of the excess deaths, marital status and ethnic differences hadlittle effect. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
