Most deaths in the US are preceded by an extended period of timeduring which one or more family members provide health and supportservices to their disabled relative. The high prevalence andsignificance of disability and death have generated two large butseparate empirical literatures: studies of family caregiving andresearch on the effects of bereavement. The purpose of this review isto facilitate the convergence of these two content areas. First, wedescribe and evaluate separately the theoretical perspectives used toexplain caregiving and bereavement outcomes and consider how theseframeworks can be applied to the bereavement process for familycaregivers. Second, existing findings on caregiving and bereavementare summarized. Third, methodological strengths and weaknesses of thecurrent research are identified and recommendations for futureresearch are made. Examination of the existing literature shows fewnegative consequences and several positive outcomes associated withthe death of the care recipient. Predictive analyses suggest that theavailability of support during caregiving and the quality of thecaregiving experience facilitate adaptation td bereavement amongformer caregivers.
