Objective. To measure the attitudes of health professionals innursing homes towards sexuality and sexual expression in cognitivelyimpaired and cognitively intact residentsDesign. Postal survey.Participants. The staff (administrators, clinicians, social workersand others) of 300 randomly selected nursing homes located in threestates. Of these, 114 representatives responded.Main outcome measure. A measure of attitudes towards residentsexuality developed during a prior study.Results. Results suggest that respondents held a generally positiveorientation towards residents' sexual expression which was expressedwith respect to cognitively impaired residents as well as to thosewho were cognitively intact. Possibly because of the small samplesize and resulting low statistical power, statistical analyses failedto demonstrate any significant differences among the groups ofresidents: administrators, clinicians, social workers, andundifferentiated 'others'. However, while non-significant, there wasa consistent tendency for administrators to be relatively moreconservative than were the other groups. Almost all respondentsagreed that additional staff training should focus specifically ondealing with resident sexual expression.Conclusions. Overall, the sample reported generally positiveattitudes towards resident sexuality and sexual expression. (C) 1997by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
