The association between education and cognitive change wasinvestigated in a large community sample of elderly people followedup after 3.6 years. Lower education was predictive of decline on theMini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and on tests of language andknowledge, but not on tests of cognitive speed, memory or reactiontime. The effects of education were not attenuated when adjusted forhealth, disability or activity level. The findings suggest thateducation slows the rate of decline on crystallized intelligence, butnot other cognitive abilities. Education may compensate forneurodegenerative changes rather than protect against them. ((C) 1997by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)
