Opplysninger
A large number of studies concerning depression in dementia sufferershave appeared in the literature over the last few years and haveadded to our knowledge considerably. The prevalence rate ofconcurrent depression and dementia among clinical samples isapproximately 20% with lower rates in the community. There isrelatively little information available regarding patients in nursinghomes, which is a priority for research along with the study ofmilder depression. Although there have been a number of interestingdevelopments regarding possible neurochemical associations ofdepression among these patients, there has been little study ofpsychosocial factors. The symptoms of depression are similar to thoseseen in patients without cognitive impairment. Concurrent depressioncreates considerable excess disability. More information is requiredabout the natural course of these disorders and treatment strategies.
