Dementia disturbs the established balance and interferes with communication in married couples. From the perspective of attachment theory, the process of dementia threatens the contracts regulating the proximity - distance in the relationship between spouses. 28 caregiving spouses, aged 60-87 were interviewed at an early stage of dementia and were followed up for a period of three years. The different challenges regarding the proximity - distance regulation of the relationship are illustrated by three sets of expectations presented by the caregiving spouses: 1. Be available for me, 2.I am not available for you, and 3.I am available for you. Spouses of elderly people with dementia need individual, grooup or family-oriented interventions that are flexible and adapted to their needs.
