Opplysninger
The Carthaginians are one of the three tragedies of Denis Petau, a French 17th-century luminary of science, Latin translator and poet, correspondent of Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski. A characteristic feature of Petau's dramatic work is its senetic character - the author not only subtly imitates the Roman philosopher and tragedian in formal and stylistic means, but also takes up the threads of his stoic thought. In the CarthaginiansThe Senetian perspective was used to reinterpret the bloody episodes of the Third Punic War, which are mentioned by ancient historians. Petau brings out the role of two strong women in the history of Carthage: Dido, the mythical founder of the city, and the wife of Hasdrubal, the last Carthaginian leader. The death of the second protagonist - the culmination of the tragedy's action - is used by the author to raise difficult questions about human freedom and dignity.--Publisher's website.
