Colombia offers ideal conditions to probe variations in terrorist tactics in civil war due to the high incidence of such attacks, the long duration of the conflict, and the multiplicity and diversity of armed groups participating in the conflict. Through interviews, archival research, and analysis of human rights data, this book explains that repertoires of terrorism, which reflect the identities, foundational myths, ideology, and leadership of armed groups, are employed by armed parties as a means of communication and to assert their relevance and territorial presence. As groups adapt their tactics in accordance with their organizational preferences to the changing conditions in civil wars, these repertoires will change and adapt, leading to a variety of different uses of terrorist activity.
