Opplysninger
The book is mainly addressed to three kinds of people viz. (i) people with research interests in the nature of mathematical thinking at any level, (ii) people with an interest in higher order thinking skills in any domain, (iii) to all mathematics teachers. The focal point of this book is a frame work for the analysis of complex problem-solving behaviour. The book is divided mainly into two parts. Part one is under the heading “Aspects of mathematical thinking. A theoretical overview”. This part is again subdivided into five chapters, viz.(a) A frame work for the analysis of mathematical behaviour: Four categories of knowledge and behaviour are introduced in this chapter. It is argued that an explanation of people’s behaviour in mathematical situations, including an explanation of why they succeed or fail in their attempts to solve mathematical problems, needs to take all four of these categories viz. cognitive resources, heuristics, control and belief systems into account.(b) Resources: This chapter throws light on an inventory of resources, which characterizes the knowledge possessed by individual problem solvers.(c) Heuristics: This chapter contains a series of major obstacles to the mastery of heuristic strategies.(d) Control: In the first portion of this chapter the author discusses the effects of two prescriptive control strategies on students’ problem- solving performance and concludes with a discussion of the ways that good or bad control can affect the problem solving performance. The portion of this chapter summarized relevant work in related fields.(e) Belief Systems: This chapter focuses on the ways that people’s mathematical world views shape the ways that those people behave in mathematical situations. The first portion of this chapter provides a brief literature review, in which similar phenomena are explored in other fields. The balance of this chapter is devoted to an exploration of the nature of students’ geometrical empiricism.Part two of this book is under the heading “Experimental and observational studies. Issues of methodology and questions of where we go next.” This part presents a series of empirical studies that flesh out the analytical fraadequate for the study of the development strategy for natural resources in general.
