Dementia is a widespread disorder among elderly and involves a serious loss of global cognitive functions. We live longer than before, and since age is a central risk factor for development of dementia, it is estimated that the number of patients with dementia will increase in the future. For psychologists it is important to be familiar with brief cognitive tools to detect symptoms of dementia. Using cognitive tools to screen for dementia is an important first step to detect dementia. This article gives the reader a short presentation of Mini-Mental State Examination, Clock-Drawing Test and the standardized informant questionnaires IQCODE and AD8. These screening tools complement each other and they are easy to administer
